Can our greatest struggles become or greatest teachers?
Your wounds can be come the source of your greatest power.
My life story is proof that truth is stranger than fiction. I began attending Alcoholics Anonymous at age five. At age ten I was participating in family drug rehab and living in a trailer park.
If reality TV existed when I was a kid I’d probably could have had my own show. Instead, I became a psychotherapist, a teacher, and an author. Go figure.
Despite entering a life of recovery at such an early age, my brokenness went unchecked for almost three decades. I became a master in the art of living a double life. I was the perfect Christian guy by day and a sex addicted binge drinker by night.
In the summer of 1994 it all came crashing down. I thank God every day it did. You can watch the video below to hear more of my story. (Yes, that’s a much younger and slightly heavier me.)
Private Advisor, Clinical Trauma Expert , Spiritual Director
Michael John Cusick is a counselor, spiritual director, and teacher who works at the intersection of trauma, attachment, and contemplative spirituality. His work is rooted in a simple but often overlooked idea: our struggles make sense. Rather than trying to fix people or manage symptoms, he helps individuals explore the deeper story beneath their pain—especially in areas like relational wounds, spiritual exhaustion, and unwanted behaviors.
As the founder of Restoring the Soul, Michael has spent decades walking with people through the realities of broken relationships, internal fragmentation, and disillusionment with both themselves and God. His approach is honest, experiential, and relational—grounded in the belief that healing doesn’t come through striving, but through experiencing safe, attuned connection. He integrates attachment theory and trauma-informed care with a contemplative vision of God as present, kind, and deeply engaged in the process of restoration.
Michael is the author of Sacred Attachment, Surfing for God, and Somebody’s Daughter. Across his work, he reframes issues like spiritual burnout and sexual struggle—not as problems to eliminate, but as invitations to understand desire, reconnect with the heart, and move toward deeper integration.
He is also the host of the Restoring the Soul Podcast, which has reached over 3 million downloads and listeners in more than 160 countries. Through candid conversations, he explores emotional health, spirituality, and the universal longing for connection in a way that resonates with both faith-based and clinical audiences.
